Narnia Night

I was able to attend Narnia Night at Asbury College last night and it was absolutely wonderful!   Here are my notes or, at least, what I can read of them.  If something does not make sense just ask and I will try to give you answer.

The night started out with some Narnia trivia (I have to brag a little and say my brother won a shirt and I won a book) and then a video of Michael Flaherty welcoming us to the night.
They then showed a trailer (just a normal one) with Carrie Underwood's song played over and clips of her singing included.
A clip of the movie was shown also: Coriakin showing the map.
This was all before the official welcome from the President of Asbury, Dr. Sandra Gray.
The rest of the night went as follows (along with my notes):

clip_image001[9] *C.S. Lewis: Why He Matters Today (Brief introduction to the world Jack was born into {Nietche, Freud, Darwin} and his conversion)

clip_image001[10] C.S. Lewis: Why He Matters Today "Reclaiming Christian Reason" ("He [Christ] told us to be not only 'as harmless as doves', but also 'as wise as serpents'. He wants a child's heart, but a grown-up's head.”)

clip_image001[11] Chris Flaherty spoke some about what he got out of this story.  He mentioned, "My favourite character from this series is Lucy Pevensie."  The reason he gave was because she always looked for the good, the blessing in every day and each trial she came to.  That is what he encouraged us to do also.  He quoted his father, “God writes straight with crooked lines.”

clip_image001[12] Clip of Georgie talking about the Dufflepuds and how imaginative Lewis was to be able to create them.

clip_image001[13] Clip of "the guys" meeting the Dufflepuds

clip_image001[14] C.S. Lewis: Why He Matters "Restoring a Christian Vision of Humanity" (Mentioned how Jack said his faith was paralyzed, stuck in the stained glass, Sunday school version of Christianity.  He wanted to bring it back to life which is one reason he wrote many of the books he did.)

clip_image001[15] Challenge: How will we use our talents, skills and imaginations to Reclaim, Rediscover and Restore Christianity in our world today?

After this segment Dr. Devin Brown came up and talked about four things to look for in the movie.

clip_image001[1]Eustace:

Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost. Aslan still loved him even though he was a “record stinker”. In Amazing Grace John Newton said, “I am a great sinner and God is a great Savior. Eustace as to first be made aware of the first truth before he can know the second. He also shows how a Christian grows- He began to be a different boy- it was not all at once.

clip_image001[2]Reepicheep:

What is it he truly seeks? He is an experienced follower of Aslan but he still has struggles; such as with his pride and honour. Is his honour more important or is what he seeks?

clip_image001[3]Aslan:

More behind the scenes in this book/movie, just as sometimes Jesus is not always visible but He is always there, guiding everything.

Here my notes are severely lacking and I cannot understand the reminders I wrote down. Something about her own faith (in Aslan) is paralyzed and throughout the story it is given life (just as C.S. Lewis described himself).

When Dr. Brown was done we watched six clips from the movie:

*Another Name

*Painting to Dawn Treader

*Eustace Steals an Orange

*Book of Incantations

*Dragon Eustace

*Lily Sea and beginning of description of Undragoning

Last but not least we saw the super trailer. I am sorry I could not take notes on that but I was kind of was sucked in.

There was a cookie reception afterward and we were able to meet Mr. Flaherty. He showed the little girl in front of us pictures of the Queen on his phone. We talked about the fact that he is ready to be home. He started this week in England for the Royal Premiere and ended it at Asbury. I do have to say I am so very mad at myself. As soon as I shook his hand my brain just froze. I was so glad when some friends of ours walked up and started talking, how embarrassing!

That was my night! A lot of fun and even more excited about the movie!

Long live Aslan!!

Through Christ,

  1. Hello, my name is Tianna. I just found your blog, and I love it! :) I'm a Christian and also a huge Narnia Fan, and I write for Aslan's Country.com, reporting stories. I quoted this story in my most recent post, "Report on Asbury Narnia Night, More screenings!" ...I hope that's ok. :)
